Where the Men Are

Douglas can talk all day about how feminism started and how there are three different ages of the development of feminism. How the feminism was really pushed and started by the baby boomers because of the type of advertising that was available to them at the time. But it is interesting to me how they never make mention to the men that helped feminism and or supported it. They want equality but they single out men as the only people that are responsible for the way people think. And make no mention to those that did support their cause.

I like the way she vocalized the change that was needed during the 60's and 70's and how the baby boomers were the perfect group to do it because they had the massive numbers to push forward the cause. The women of that time were then able to achieve many things that were previously unable to do and thus push forward a time of equality that we now are still enjoying. This is not to say that everything is perfect in our society when it come to equal rights for men and women. But, it means that we are making the appropriate changes and are still fighting for those things that we have yet to achieve, especially in the political world.

I would like to further advocate my vendetta by saying that I think that it would further the cause of women's rights if they had men on their side to say that something is wrong as well. It would help men realize that it is not just a feministic issue but that everyone is involved.

  1. Hey Nate,

I agree that Women need us men as well. Not to mention the fact that if we say media influences the way women act/think why do people not think it doesn't influence us men? It does, sometimes in the same way women are...how we dress, what we wear etc. I would say that while the babyboomer generation might have been influenced that heavily by the media the one I know I was taught was how to turn off the TV.

  2. It would be very smart of them to use men on their side, its like having someone playing for you on the other team. It would be a major advantage. She did make a great point as well when she said that the media targeted the baby boomers and did all that they could to completely control that market. And if we look at the world today, it proves it.

  3. What I want to know is, ARE there any many in history who have really done a lot to help the feminism movement move along? They must exist. I know that I myself like to be considered as a male feminist but then i have never actively done anything to promote or move the cause along.

As was said in class, there were no female executives in the media with any power to change how women were viewed or portrayed, so it really was men that were making all the desisions.

    Two points arise from this.
    1) In that day and age, why should we assume that Men would advocate and support Feminism, a Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.

    2) It would be interesting to know of any men in that time period, even to this day that did and do support the cause. How would those males be viewed by the rest of society.
